European Union votes to ban antibiotic use in animals.

On October 25 the European parliament voted 583 to 16 (with 20 abstentions) to approve measures to limit antibiotic use in livestock and poultry.

Australian regulations may fall into step with the EU in the near future.
The EU vote approved that:

“...veterinary antibiotics must not under any circumstances serve to improve the performance of the animals or compensate for poor animal husbandry. The rules would limit the use of antimicrobials as a preventive measure, in the absence of clinical signs of infection...”

And, more importantly for Australian producers:
“...the text also imposes that imported foodstuffs will have to meet EU standards and that antibiotics cannot be used to enhance the growth of animals.”
